Music and Poetry

Enjoy a delightful concert by the talented prize-winning young pianists Ryan Stover, Christie Solomon, Miles Fawson, and Jessica Zhang from the 2019 Steinway/Avanti Future Stars Piano Comeptition. 

Preceded by a talk titled "The Music of Poetry and How to Hear it" by Robert Bjork. Dr. Bjork is Foundation Professor of English at Arizona State University, where he specialized in Old and Middle English and Old Norse language and literature. 

Dr. Bjork will take a brief look at the origins of the lyric in Greece, the beginnings in Old English, and how poems work. Audience will leave with a simple system for analyzing any poem they come across with a reasonable degree of certainty of how the poem makes them feel as it does. If time permits, we will go ghrough Shakespeare's sonnet 146 line-by-line as a concrete example.
